Have you ever thought that everyone else in the world seems to be in total control of their lives? You would be forgiven for thinking that everyone around you seems to be able to manage a job, a house, kids, fitness... whatever life throws at them... whilst you feel like you are struggling to keep up with just day to day activities.
Well the good news is... you are not alone! The fact is that we are all good at 'keeping up appearances' to the outside world, even when our own private world might be about to crash around our ears. This is usually partly down to the fact that we don't want to appear 'weak' or to admit that we can't cope to the outside world... but it is also partly a self-protection mechanism as we all like to feel in control of our lives.
So if you ARE one of those people who wonders just how other people manage to seem always in control and on top of things, what can you do about it? There may be a number of things you can do - it might be that you would benefit from delegating jobs to others, getting a cleaner, or finding someone to help you out - and you could also book in for a few hypno-coaching sessions!
'Hypno-coaching' is a term I use to describe a process where I use a techniques taken from personal coaching, combined with hypnotherapy. Coaching can be very useful for helping people get direction in their lives for sure, however our critical, judgemental conscious minds often resist taking action; usually as a result of a lack of self-belief. Combining coaching with hypnotherapy enables me to help my clients tap into the power of their subconscious mind, which enables people to bypass their own self-critical judgements and to work out exactly what it is they want out of life. This process is not an 'overnight change' of course - good things don't come easily - but it might just help you get that vital element of control back in your life.
If you'd like to book in for a session of hypno-coaching, please email me today at christy@christyhypnotherapy.com or call 01252 334377.

Hypnotherapy for pain and injury recovery
On Friday 7th February at 11am, I will be again hosting my hour long show on Natural Health Radio.
This week on my show I an lucky enough to be joined by Tim Dalby-Quenet. Tim runs his own business called ‘The Massage Hut’ where he offers clients a range of bespoke massage therapies including deep tissue, Indian head massage and even Himalayan hot stones. During this show I will be interviewing Tim about the different types of massage, the many benefits and also about the range of issues which can be improved using massage. If you have ever wondered whether massage would help you specifically, during this interview I'm sure you will learn that pretty much anyone can benefit! Whether you are just looking for some relaxation or whether you have pain resulting from an injury or more serious physical condition such as Lupus, Arthritis or even MS - massage can work wonders!
I will also spend some time talking about injury and pain – both of which can be hugely improved using hypnotherapy – and will be exploring some of my recent experiences with both these after some recent ankle surgery. Don’t worry – there won’t be any graphic detail…!
As always I’d love to hear from anyone with feedback or comments: please email me at christy@christyhypnotherapy.com or Tweet me @ChristyRoxburgh.

Hypnosis in the news
On Friday 24th January at 11am, I will be hosting my radio show, "Christy Hypnotherapy" which is now aired every other week on Natural Health Radio.
Recently I decided to take a look through the press to see what articles, press releases and interesting stories I could find about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I was surprised by the sheer number I found which have appeared in various publications (both online and in paper) in just the past few months so I thought it would be interesting to review some of these on my next radio show.
During my 60 minute show I'm going to be talking through some of these articles, discussing the relevance of hypnotherapy in today's society and also talking through some experiences with my own clients. It may be surprising for some listeners to learn the wide range of situations where hypnosis can be useful, especially when combined with more 'conventional' medicine.
To listen live, please head over to http://naturalhealthradio.co.uk at 11am on Friday 24th. The show will also be replayed at various points over the coming week so if you miss it on Friday, please check the schedule for replays.
And please do contact me if you have any questions or comments about what I'm discussing: just email me at christy@christyhypnotherapy.com or call me on 01252 334377.

How does hypnosis work?
One definition of hypnosis I recently came across is that it is, "a state of aroused, attentive, focal concentration with a relative reduction in peripheral awareness". I wanted to begin this blog with this definition as I think it helps explain that hypnosis does not mean you go unconscious, become unaware of what is happening or that you have reduced control over yourself. In fact the complete opposite is true - my clients very often experience feelings of having a heightened sense of awareness and feelings of increased personal control.
So how does hypnosis work? To help explain I would like to quote Deb Barton, who is an Associate Professor of Oncolocy at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, in the USA who says, "The brain is the central headquarters for a lot of the chemicals that really govern the physiological processes in our bodies". She also says "There have been several studies that show that, through providing various messages to the mind, these chemicals change". The end result of this chemical shift can for some, produce a significant change in the way we feel.
As part of the process of inducing hypnosis, people are often asked to imagine a pleasant scene such as a beach or a forest... the point of this is firstly to help relax the person physically and mentally and also to 'wake up' the imagination. When we daydream or become engrossed in something (like a good film) our brains cycle from the 'beta' (or waking state) to an 'alpha' state. Hypnosis has a very similar effect, and by using metaphor, it helps the brain to be more open to suggestion which can re-calibrate our mind-body connection. Whilst some people think they can't be hypnotised, it's actually true that people who have good imaginations are actually extremely good at it. Most people can be hypnotised to some degree - the only question is how far they can go.
Part of the reason why hypnosis works is that the deep relaxation of the hypnotic state is hugely beneficial. Many illnessess (both psychological or physical) are aggravated by anxiety and muscle tension so the negative symptoms can be significantly reduced through relaxation alone. The hypnotic state, whilst relaxing, is not however specifically therapeutic in itself; but rather the suggestions and images which are repeated to the client which can profoundly alter behaviour. So for example if a client was experiencing pain, I might use a metaphor that they imagine the pain as a red light or red liquid which is hot in temperature. I would then suggest they gradually change the colour to perhaps a cooling, soothing blue - the result is a significant reduction in the experience of discomfort for the client.
So in summary, hypnosis works by first helping our brain move toward an 'alpha' brainwave state where we can access our imagination and establish a stronger mind-body connection. Once this has happened, a hypnotherapist will then often use visualisation and metaphor to help the client change the way they think and feel. As people then rehearse the new ways they want to think and feel over time, they lay the groundwork for powerful changes in their future actions. Simples!
If you are interested in finding out how hypnosis could benefit you, please call Christy today on 01252 334377 or email christy@christyhypnotherapy.com

Refer someone for Hypnotherapy with Christy and receive a £10 voucher!
This is not a 'usual' blog post however I wanted to let as many people as possible know about a new referral scheme which I'm delighted to offer to anyone, not JUST to my previous clients.
Do you know anyone who would like to stop smoking before Christmas? Or perhaps someone who has a fear of heights, spiders or another fear that they would like to overcome? Or do you know anyone who plays golf and would like to better train their mental skills over the winter months when they can't play on the course?!
If so then I would like to invite you to pass their details onto me (with their permission of course!). If they go on to book in for a hypnotherapy session, as a thank you for the referral I will provide a £10 Amazon Voucher for each new client referral I receive!
If you would like to know more, please email me on christy@christyhypnotherapy.com and I will send a referral form for you to complete.
If you would like to know what previous clients have said about hypnotherapy sessions with me, please follow this link: Client testimonials

Say no to get control of your life!
Do you find it hard to say no to
others? Always being agreeable might be nice on the surface, but it can have
serious consequences. Here are four tips to make it easier to say no.
The word no is the most powerful word you can use and not being
able to say no can bring disaster.
Bosses who can't say no will create confusion. If you tell
everyone they can take next Friday off, you'll have an empty office. The employee who can't say no loses out. You will take on more
tasks than you can handle. Even worse, your boss may spot you as an individual
who lacks self-respect and initiative and will pass you over at promotion time.
In the family, if you say yes to a beach holiday when you would actually prefer the mountains, your disappointment can grow into resentment,
spoiling the family outing.
Saying yes all the time can also threaten friendships. If you end
up doing things purely out of obligation, you might end up resenting the very
people you need around you for support.
Bank Managers can't say yes to
everyone who applies for a loan. Coaches can't let everyone play, no matter how
much the wannabe athletes plead. If you own a business, you cannot let all of
your customers have an additional ninety days to pay or you would go out of business. We could list many more examples...
Perhaps you are wondering how you can say no without sounding rude
or jeopardising relationships? Use these tips:
- Assure the person that you respect his or her request, and that your decline isn't personal. "Sounds like a very good project, yet my busy schedule won't allow me to participate."
- Explain why your refusal benefits both of you. For example, declining membership on a committee, you might say: "I'm going to be traveling extensively over the coming months. If I accepted, I couldn't attend meetings or arrange events. You'll benefit more by getting someone who will be available."
- Invite the other person to help you make the decision. Let's say your boss gives you a big assignment. You might respond with: "Here's a list of what I am working on already. If I take this new assignment, I'll have to drop something. Please tell me which projects deserve top priority."
- If you can't do everything someone wants, offer them something in return: For example, "No, I can't be responsible for four programs next month, but I can take control of one if that will help.
Whatever strategy you choose, it is vital that you protect your life balance, your integrity, and your relationships by
declining when you need to. You will be amazed at how much a two-letter word can
improve your life!
If you are interested in how hypnotherapy could help you gain that all important confidence to take back control of your life, please contact Christy at christy@christyhypnotherapy.com or call 01252 334377.
